When Captain America Says "Avengers... Assemble" The Avengers Are Already Assembled
I’ve been doing this gig for a while so I’ve said a lot on the internet that has upset people. I’ve said a lot of things that I probably shouldn’t have. But absolutely nothing has given me pause like this before I said it, wondering if it was worth the fight and getting yelled at for god knows how long. I could just not point out this absolutely correct fact, but I’m not going to let us all sit around here and be wrong all day.
With Endgame becoming available to buy yesterday, there has been much hullaballoo around the internet about the record setting film and LCB tweeted this clip yesterday, declaring it the greatest scene/moment in movie history. It’s a good scene, don’t get me wrong. I liked both it and the movie very much. Yet one thing bothered me when I first saw it, has bothered me since, and now that it’s receiving such high praise as the greatest scene in history to the tune of 4k retweets and 15k likes of agreement, I’ve gotta speak my truth: Captain America’s “Avengers…. assemble” makes NO sense. They are very much already assembled when he says it. I don’t care if that’s an iconic comic book line, it looks insane here.
The definition of the word assemble:
A group of superheroes assembled before anyone has even formally suggested the idea:
Cap looks like a guy storming into a quiet room and demanding that everyone shut up, or a high school coach telling his locker room of kneeling athletes to grab a knee. We’ve already done that, my man, what’s the next step? He should have either said “Avengers… attack!” here of he should have said “Avengers… assemble” before everyone showed up through the space doors.
How could he have done that? Glad you asked, Sam Wilson was in Wakanda when he said “Cap… on your left” so clearly they’re all connected on some kind of communications link. Would’ve been a useful way to call for backup imho.
Anyway, have a great day. I watched the movie again last night, I loved it. I’m also right about everything I just said.
